Yesterday, Gianni Cobb announced his commitment to Columbia. Columbia first got in contact with Cobb, his first live period this year in April. Columbia is a divison 1 basketball team in the IVY League, out of New York. Columbia is popularly known for its rigorous academics and the celebration of cultural and intellectual diversity.

I had the pleasure of asking the senior point guard some questions about his commitment and hopes for this upcoming season.

Why Columbia?

"They have been great during this recruitment process. When my parents and I took the visit I felt like I was at home. They also have been to Chicago twice already just to see me workout. They make me feel wanted, and that really means a lot. As far as education wise the school speaks for itself. It’s a win win!"

I love how Gianni said that attending Columbia is a "win win". A lot of players just think about the basketball portion of their college and don't think about the academics, campus, culture, etc, which leads to a lot of transferring.

How does your game translate to the next level, especially at Columbia?

"After doing my research small guards flourish in the ivy league. Columbia style of play fit my game. I feel that i can play free and be me. Their exact words to me that stood out is we need a PG that can run a team but can also SCORE the ball."

Cobb has proven every single year that he can run a team by not only dishing the rock but scoring it as well. It's nice to hear Columbia has those plans, and believes in Gianni to lead their program.

After transferring to HF, what can you bring to the table as a leader, and lead this team to a state championship?

"I can bring experience and good energy. I am trying to be more vocal, that is something that I didn’t have last year. Being that i was one game of getting down state last year, losing in the super sectional game left a hungry taste in my mouth. I learned things last year that will make me help my team this year get to a state championship."

Gianni talks about how hungry he is about just missing out on going down state, losing in that super sectional game. This always gives players a lot of motivation to make it happen this year, and I believe he can do it.

After being at a different school every year, how can you use that as an advantage?

"That just means i can fit any system, cause if people do their research every year i’ve only gotten better. So if there is an advantage it will be that I can adjust to any situation."

Analyze your game, what’s the best part, what do you need to work on?

"My best part I feel is my speed and IQ for the game. What i need to work on is being more of a consistent shooter from mid range and 3!"

It was nice to get some answers to Cobb's commitment, and some insight on his hopes for this season!
